Renee Pernice Disappears As Couple Awaits Divorce?

Renee Pernice, another byproduct of a dysfunctional divorce system or just a random disappearance? That is the question one Legal Pub reader submitted along with this story. Renee Pernice is a 35-year-old mother of two young children. She disappeared from her home in Kansas City, Missouri, in January of this year. No one has heard from her since.

Foul play is suspected; however, her body has not been discovered. Furthermore, no arrests have been made. Police have not named her husband, Shon Pernice, as a person of interest or a suspect in the case. On the other hand, "he's the last known person to see her alive," according to Doug Niemeier, a sergeant with the Kansas City Police Department. Renee's husband, Shon Pernice, is a firefighter. He allegedly entered Station #5, a local fire department's hazardous materials building (where cleaning supplies are stored) around 4:30 a.m. on January 3. Could this be related to Renee's disappearance shortly after the new year?

Renee was pursuing a divorce around the time she disappeared. Is her disappearance just a coincidence? Shon Pernice denies that he was involved in her disappearance. In a March interview, Shon Pernice said, "It's gut-wrenching thinking that either she's got a rich-ass doctor boyfriend somewhere and she's happy, or she's dead." Since his wife's disappearance, Shon has been accused of allegedly stealing a neighbor's gun and for disturbing the peace in an incident with that same neighbor on July 4, 2009. Has the media unfairly painted Shon Pernice as a villain? What happened to a presumption of innocence? Our system of justice demands a presumption of innocence After all the couple's two sons, ages 6 and 9, need their father. (While Shon currently has custody, Renee Pernice's mother has sought custody of the children.)

Renee Pernice was a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital. She was last seen with her dogs in her backyard on Friday, January 2, 2009. While she disappeared, her purse, coat and other items were still in the house. Renee's car was in the garage. Renee's cell phone was missing from the house. Her phone was found on January 3, 009, 15 miles from her home. A search of that area found nothing else.

There is a $25,000 reward being offered by the family. A white truck appears in surveillance video in an area where her phone was discovered may be related to her disappearance. Renee is 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and has brown hair and blue eyes. Kansas City Police Department will welcome any tips at 1-816-474-TIPS.

For once I hope the husband had nothing to do with this one!

They got nothing on this guy or he would have been arrested.

While the presumption of innocence is important, if you dig into the patterns of husbands in the midst of divorce you will find that some of them are quite distinct. Also, not mentioned is that Shon Pernice is also connected to another missing woman's case, Star Boomer, although, once again, the evidence is circumstantial, and no one "in the know" is talking.

What kind of example is he setting for his children by drunkenly yelling at a neighbor (the same neighbor he stole a gun from) that was confrontational enough to have gotten himself arrested? All done in front of the children.

The only thing in his favor, in my opinion, is his last name isn't "Peterson." Let's not forget about the Petersons, Scott, Michael, and now Drew, who all three were in rocky marriages!

If it walks like a duck.....

EAch case has to be viewed on its own merrits. No way Shon was involved in the other disappearance.

The neighbor is a joke. If Shon took the gun it was likely for his own protcction from all those unjustly accusing him including the neighbor.

Disturbing the peace. That all they got?

I agree with you that every case must be presented on it's own merit, however, like diseases, certain patterns emerge in cases and are getting easier to "diagnose."

I would also assume that in court that's why past cases are cited, in order to compare the circumstances and precedents set by that case.

I'm not a lawyer, and don't pretend to know the points of law, however, I've seen enough of missing mother cases to be able to sniff out certain things that some cases have in common.

Thank God our legal system isn't relying on my nose! LOL

Actually, in jury trials, other crimes are not cited. Points of law may be argued to keep evidence in or out of a case, but we don't compare criminals.

The other offenses are minor. They become significant if the suspect squeals to another inmate about the major offense. This can become a statement against interest and be admissible.

I don't know if this man is innocent or not. But I won't presume guilt just because of a nasty divorce was pending.

J.T. - or I mean Shon...you give yourself away every time! If there is no way Shon Pernice was involved in the Star case then I guess he was just running around making up lies when she disappeared so he'd look "cool" because he definately talked about being invovled.

The neighbors are a joke to you because they don't back down to Shon Pernice's tactics. It sucks when you don't get your way doesn't it!

Disturbing the peace will work until Shon Pernice makes his next move! There is never a dull moment when it comes to this cat!

J.T. is not Shon!

When a woman decides to run off with another man, someone somewhere knows about it...they do not vanish without a trace.
Her mother, sister, brother, or a close friend would know where she was even if it was a nasty prank to teach the husband or mate, a lesson.

She is dead, and her body can be found somewhere along the route where her cell phone was found.

The question now becomes who killed her? Her husband or some psycho who stumbled into her home.

She could have went outside to cool off after arguing with her husband. Then she may have been taken by a random psycho. Or maybe she did in fact have a prearranged time to meet with a secret lover and he turned out to be a psycho.

You are all correct that anything could have happened to her after she was last seen by her husband (Shon Pernice). BUT why didn't he report her missing? Her family had to report her missing 2 days later. Speaks volumes.

I suspect Shon did not know she was missing. They were divorcing. She didn't have to tell him where she was going and quite frankly, since it was over he should not care. 48 hours of being missing in a divorce situation is not in and of itself alarming.

I went out of the country for 3 days before my estranged knew where I was vacationing. It happens...

All a woman needs to know from an estranged husband is when is the check coming, baby!

Sorry Christy, read-up on the case. He was supposed to be leaving for a military drill. He knew exactly when she went missing.

How long was the military drill to be conducted?

If he had her whacked, why not have it done while he was at drill?
