Insurance Companies Cringe As 100 Year Rain Hits South Western Indiana ~by Walter P. Rat

Insurance companies cringe as the hundred year rain devastates South Western Indiana. A hundred year rain is defined as six inches of rain in 24 hours. Vermilion and Vigo County accumulated 6.9 inches of rain in about seven hours. The result is wide scale flooding and power outages. The U.S. Coast Guard and Indiana National Guard are on the scene to help with water rescues from vehicles and homes. This historic flooding continues to ravage portions of central Indiana with many areas praying that levys will hold.

A barrage of thunderstorms early Saturday morning dumped as much as 10 inches of rain on already saturated ground, prompting severe flooding in areas primarily south and west of Indianapolis. The worst of the flooding appears to be in Brown, Morgan, Johnson, Monroe, Shelby, Clay and Vigo counties.
It is now much easier for Midwest residents to understand the suffering of hurricane victims. Many of the affected home owners are without flood insurance.

Worry about disease is very real if the water does not evaporate soon.

Martinsville Indiana had over 9.5 inches. Many roads washed out.

Unless you live by a levy or a river, or live in a flood plain, most folks do not have flood insurance. A lot of personal property has been damaged. Many good people are without a home tonight in South Eastern Illinois and South Western Indiana.

Water had reached the first floor of Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, county Commissioner Tom Kite said, and cars were submerged up to their windshields in the county government building parking lot.

"We have dams failing in the Prince's Lakes area," threatening the town of Nineveh about 30 miles south of Indianapolis, Kite said.

The Indiana National Guard helped with rescues in Morgan County, southwest of Indianapolis.

Wisconsin and Iowa have been hit real hard too!

The Kickapoo River engulfed nearly the entire village of Gays Mills,Wisconsin forcing about 150 people to evacuate. The town was filled with cars submerged up to their windows. Parking lots looked like lakes. Floodwater threatened dams across the Midwest. Sandbagging operations to attempt to hold back Indiana streams. Weather was blamed for 10 deaths in the Midwest.

The East struggles with heat advisories from the Carolinas to Connecticut. Temperatures topped 100 from Georgia to Virginia. New York City recorded a high of 99.

Maybe God is a little upset, you think?

President Bush has declared 29 counties in Indiana as major disaster areas. Eight counties have been designated to receive Individual Assistance through FEMA. The ISBA is now awaiting approval from the ABA to create a hotline for Indiana residents to call in for referrals to volunteer attorneys who will assist them with questions on insurance claims, replacing legal documents, help with home repair contracts, advice on problems with landlords, help with guardianships, etc.

It is natural to want to blame others, but it is no one's fault when the 100 year rain comes along and floods lakes, ponds, and rivers.

10 to 12 inches of rain in Vigo County Indiana that Friday. It was awful. Never seen anything like it before.

Thank goodness nothing like that other than Hurricane Sandy! Wake up people, we got a disaster here in New York and the rest of you are not sending in donations fast enough to help us.
