When Headline News first mentioned a shark bite attack, Many assumed it was another nasty divorce case with over zealous attorneys. Others associated bite with the recent Pitt Bull problems. When the story revealed it was a human beast encounter with a great white shark, legal advocates and pitt bull owners breathed a collective sigh of relief. But for the surfing community in Monterey Bay, little consolation came to those who witnessed a 24 year old California surfer get bit by a shark in Monterey Bay early Tuesday. The surfer was airlifted to a hospital with bite wounds to his torso and thigh.
(While the surfers name has not been revealed, Legal Pub has unconfirmed reports that his first name may be "Eric")
The surfer was at Marina State Beach when the shark attacked him around 11 a.m.
The victim screamed and started punching the shark while trying to flee. Witnesses say that the shark took him down under the water.
(Another unconfirmed report is that the suspect is a 20 foot great white shark.) Surfers pulled the victim out of the water. He was conscious and breathing when he was taken away by ambulance and then airlifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. The victim is expected to live and has apparently undergone surgery.
After the attack, state officials closed all the beaches from Monterey State Beach to Moss Landing.
Hopefully, Surfer Dude will provide an exclusive update as I suspect he has nothing better to do today now that the beaches are closed.
Update 8-30-07 Courtesy of Poster Surfer Dude: "The dude surfing was not Eric it was Todd. Todd Endris is 24 years old. He hails from Marina. He was surfing with a half dozen of his bros at Marina State Beach when the shark attacked him. It bit his board from behind. It was about an hour before lunch when it happened. Some say it was a 20 foot great white. Other dudes say it was closer to 12 or 15. Either way, narly wounds on Todd but they say he will be fine." Surfer Dude
Update 9-12 Todd is doing great. He has a 30 inch scar on his back. He plans to return to surfing in 6 weeks and will be back on his "Super Fish" board. While he says he will go back to Marina State Beach, he will no longer "surf alone."
Update 12-28: An appreciative Todd Endris appeared on Larry King. LINK
Todd is doing real well. He is back to surfing and runs a little business on the beach. Follow the link and you will know why the Beattles were correct in singing "I get a little help from my friends..."

Update 6-5-08 Todd Endris stops by and shares his humor in comment #42!
Update 10-24-11: American George Thomas Wainwright, 32, was attacked and killed by a great white while diving off a boat near Rottnest Island, a few miles from Perth in Western Australia state.

Park officials and the media need to chill. There are more people killed or injured by deer than there are sharks. Attacks are just a way of the wave...
Surfer Dude
P.S. I will try to get you some more photos.
Sharks take bigger bites then pitbulls! Scary!
Linda
I get your point surfer dude. They would not close the high way just because a deer ran out in front of a car and hurt the drive. So why should they close the beach because of a random event?
Bob
I too get it. You would not close central park just because some one got bit by a dog.
You are pretty wise surfer dude.
Jerri
Could that suspect be Mac The Knife ?
Shark looks guilty to me!
I'm sure the officials want to see if maybe the shark is sick (or injured) and might be hanging around the area. Especially if this doesn't happen often. Also, a deer unknowingly jumps out and collides with a car...it doesn't "attack" the vehicle.
What?! I just got back from my two week camping trip, where people were overly worried about grizzlies, lightning, and cougars. I go to relax and read some legal pub and what do I find? Fear of sharks in a shark attack. D'oh! They say that if surfers would go back to the old boards, which don't resemble seals as much from underneath, the shark attacks would go back down in numbers. I've heard from friends of fomer lifeguards out there that there are more shark attacks than they let on, for tourist reasons. Who knows.
In the Grand Canyon, several people are killed annually by deer who kick them because the deer expect potato chips from tourists, who have been feeding them so much they now get pissy if you don't. Finally, I get to a place with no bears and little to fear, save the occassional rattler, and there are fat, killer deer.
Speaking of animals, for anyone interested, I posted some great photos from the trip to Yellowstone and other wild places in the west U.S. on my blog. Got one of a grizzly with four cubs; no sharks, though. Legal Pub, your timing was amazing with this shot! You'll have to teach me your tricks.
Surfer dude,
I admire your attitude. Me, you could not pay me to get in that water until the shark is hanging on a hook . . .
Surfing is just a way of life for the Surfer Dude. I may be able to get more photos to give to legal pub.
Surfer Dude
Surfer Dude, thanks for the photos and update. I wish Todd Endris a speedy recovery.
very cool report surfer dude
Speedy recovery wished to Todd Endris
Julie
Get well soon, Todd Endris and come on the pub and tell us about this event. When you get well, you will be a star!
Linda
Thanks for the great coverage of Todd Endris story.
Todd Endris = Legend!
Great coverage. Thanks Surfer Dude and Legal Pub.
Terry
This is the luckiest man in america. Todd Endris has become a surfing legend for defeating the great white!
Todd Endris is almost as big as California Surfer Dude!
Bigger
Surfer Dude
Todd is the hero of the ocean. You got Batman, Spiderman and now Todd Endris!
Bingo, I got it! Let's put Todd Endris on a show called, "The Great White Shark Hunter." Todd can replace the Crocodile Hunter who passed away.
It is a win, win proposition. He can
be sponsored by the makers of Super Fish and surf apparel manufacturers.
What do you think?
Add Man
Superman Todd Endris on Super Fish!
Don't forget the role of the magical dolphin ring in the survival of Todd Endris!
The whole deer/shark thing.....I've never seen a shark "caught in the headlights"...these great whites are monstrous....Todd was interviewed by FOX and says a "wave from God" helped to save him...cool...here is another wave...www.wellspringlutheran.org....God's waves are awesome because they come at the perfect time...
Dan
Dan, whether it was a monstrous wave or a ring of dolphins or some quick acting friends, it is certain in my mind that God was lending a major helping hand.
Ralph
I have to agree with you folks. Todd is in a position to be a good role model and probably make a few dollars. No matter what or who saved Todd, we know that he must be special.
Todd live up to the challenge and live a good life. Good role models are desperately needed not just in the surfing world, but in the world period.
Rather be shark bait then gator bait any old time of the year!
Fear the GReat White Nightmare!
I fear being caught by a mean woman more than I do a white shark.
Surf lover
Since I helped write this story, just a short update. From what I hear, Todd Enris is doing very well. Recovered from his injuries except of course from the scars. I have not seen him recently, but shortly after his release from the hospital he told the press he would be back boarding soon. I imagine there will be a movie deal for the Todd Endris Story. Hopefully he remembers his buds and fellow boarders as his fame and wealth rises.
Surfer Dude
Thanks Surfer Dude. You live the life! Can't see you ever changing even if you won the lottery. Peace Bro.
Barry
Bet he has knarly scars!
keep up the good work, I mean bumming, Surfer Dude

Update 12-28: An appreciative Todd Endris appeared on Larry King. LINK is on the front page. Todd is doing real well. He is back to surfing and runs a little business on the beach. Follow the link and you will know why the Beattles were correct in singing "I get a little help from my friends..." Todd credits a pod of dolphins and a few good friends for saving him that day.
Thanks for the Larry King link!
Here is another great video link in the update on the front page. The dolphins may have made his rescue possible. No more mahi mahi!
Update 1-4: Excellent video story with Todd Endris here: LINK on front page.
Great coverage! Ted
Good luck Todd
Great Whites usually attack from the bottom and then swim up towards the surface to kill seals!
Maybe Todds board looked like a seal...
I appreciate all the funny comments. It really lightens up a really serious situation, which is something that most news stories need. I poke fun at the incident too. I still havent heard of anyone being attacked or killed by a deer though, so keep me posted. Who is surfer dude? Do i know you? and how did someone say that it was eric that got attacked? a shark wouldnt go for him, he tastes too much like malt liquor.
Todd Sharkboy
Todd, welcome! You are a hero both in and out of the surf community. Legal Pub sometimes gets stories from Surfer Dude. Whether you know him or not (now that you are famous), the old guy must know you as he gave us a report real quick. He also gave us information on Emery Kauanui's death down in San Diego area. See story at http://legalpublication.blogspot.com/search?q=bird+rock
Perhaps you could give us some insight into Emery's death and/or let us know how you have recovered.
You can post here or write
legalpub@legalpub.net
If Todd comes on here and give us an update on what he is doing, that would be so cool.
Laura
Todd, you need to make a movie! you have fans all across the U.S.
You could be the new moon dogie and work the shark attack into the skit. Maybe Surfer Dude could get the role of Eric Vanzipper and Paris Hilton the new Gidget!
Karen
Todd Endris a.k.a. shark boy rocks!
Todd, have you entered any big events lately?
Honey
We love you Todd!
Honalaura
Hey Surfer Dude:
Did you hear about a surfer being dragged from the ocean with his hand dangling after being mauled by a vicious shark at Bondi Beach in Sydney? A 33-year old, Glen, was having a sunset surf when he WAS BIT.
A doctor and nurse happened to be walking past and were able to administer first aid.
Yup. Sh#t happens dude. Can't let it stop the quest for the perfect ride.
Surfer Dude
Keep hangen...
Huge shark found on the beach today. Filmed by CNN .
todd is still the coolest.
Still surfing too!
