Prison is Not a Holiday Inn

Riot Breaks Out at Indiana PrisonBy TOM MURPHY
NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP)

Indiana officials suspended plans to accept hundreds more inmates from Arizona after rioting broke out in a state prison run by a private company. Authorities were investigating whether Tuesday's two-hour fracas, involving about 500 inmates, started because some newly arrived prisoners from Arizona were upset about their treatment at the medium-security men's prison. Two staff members and seven prisoners suffered minor injuries at New Castle Correctional Facility, officials said. ... "They were wrapped up in masks, with sticks, knives, shanks," Savage said of the inmates. "They were just flexing their muscles and they wanted to show that they could take the prison over at any time, and that's what they did."

Inmates set fire to mattresses and paper in the courtyard and destroyed furniture and windows before the prison was secured, officials said. The disturbance came six weeks after the first of some 600 Arizona inmates began joining 1,050 Indiana prisoners at the facility, about 45 miles east of Indianapolis. Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner J. David Donahue said he has delayed the transfer of 600 more inmates from Arizona until authorities can reassess the condition of the prison. Donahue said the riot began after a group of inmates from Arizona disobeyed orders and took off their shirts in the prison's recreation area to show staff they wouldn't comply with orders. "This system is different than what they are accustomed to," he said. Some of the newly arrived inmates had complained about a lack of recreation and other programs, said Trina Randall, a spokeswoman for GEO Group Inc.

Inmates had complained about being moved, which was prompted by the state's shortage of prison space. The injured staff members suffered cuts and scrapes, while the injuries to inmates involved tear gas exposure and minor cuts. All seven inmates were treated at the prison, Randall said.

When I was playing ball, there were a few of my fellow athletes that mistook the State Penn for Penn State. Their mistake not only kept them from a college education, it kept them from being able to support themselves later in life.

The local jails are filled with Meth heads. I have no sypathy for idiots who use, sell or manufacture drugs.

Prison should not be a resort. It needs to be the punishment these crooks deserve.

Indiana was looking to profit by taking out of state prisoners. They ought to just concentrate on their own state's overcrowded prisons.

Just because someone goes to prison does not mean they can't change. Hopefully, the men and women in stripes will improve their station in life during their reform.

Not sure about reform. But if jail does not work the second or third time around, I think a life sentence might be the best thing. I just think that a repeat offender has lost his right to be on the streets.

Great topic Legalpub!

I will try to find the article, but a while back I read about my nearby minimum security prison was having a controversey. The prison is located at a former resort of some type, in coastal California. The "inmates" were lobbying the warden to fill the swimming pool so they could play water polo. The warden, concerned about negative press and losing his job, was resisting this successfully at the time the article was written. There was no uprising to report, but shows this type of thing has gone too far.

I say round up all the bad boys and hang them from the highest tree. (Willie Nelson helped sing the song but it has a lot of truth.)

It is time to get tough on criminals not improve their conditions. I say send them over to Iraq and see what happens when folks don't follow the law.

From the L.A. Times

1. 40% of all workers in L.A. County ( L.A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This was because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card.

2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.

4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.

5. Nearly 25% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.

Interesting stats on L.A. immigration. Congress is in the process of passing a new immigration bill. Amnesty for all!
