University of Cincinnati police officer, Ray Tensing, has been charged with the murder of Samuel DuBose which occurred during a traffic stop. Samuel DuBose was a 43 years old African-American man who was pulled over because his front license plate was missing. .
Reports from the video footage leave viewers wondering why a weapon was discharged. Tensing has plead not guilty to charges of murder and involuntary manslaughter. Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell said that officers "have to be held accountable." Mayor John Cranley said the way officials have handled the case could make Cincinnati a model for "the pursuit of justice."
Tensing may himself be a victim of inexperience. The 25 year-old cop had only worked for the University of Cincinnati a little more than a year. He had a UC degree in criminal justice and a little experience working for another department, hardly a seasoned veteran. Nevertheless, common sense dictates restraint when dealing with an unarmed man. Tensing's attorney, Stewart Mathews, said his client did not intend to kill DuBose and has plead not guilty.
As with any suspect, Tensing, is to be considered innocent unless otherwise proven in a court of law.
