Contrasting Sunset Weddings ~ by Jill

A story of two contrasting weddings. One in Crawford, Texas with a beautiful Texas sunset in the background. Another at Rose Medical Center in a sterile hospital setting. Jenna Bush and Henry Hager said "I do" this past weekend and so did Roxanne Velasquez and David Lowery.
Jenna, 26, married Henry Hager, the son of a Virginia Republican. Jenna Bush wore a white silk organza Oscar de la Renta gown. Roxanne Velasquez wore a black and white dress from Target.

Jenna stood with Henry before a beige-colored cross and altar made of Texas limestone with a sunset in the background. Roxanne stood by her man's hospital bed at a time that he is in the sunset of his life. David removed his oxygen mask for the celebratory kiss. Bush family friend Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell of Houston officiated the vows in front of 200 family members and friends. A last minute minister conducted the Lowery wedding ceremony in front of nurses, orderlies and a handful of friends.

Jenna Welch Bush and Henry Chase Hager have what seems a long bright future. Roxanne Velasquez and David Lowery have only so long as the terminally ill Lowery shall live.
Update 5-13-08: Friday, David Lowery and Roxanne Velasquez said I do in the ICU at Rose Medical Center. At the time, Lowery was near death. Lowery battled rheumatoid arthritis for many years. Recently, his lungs started to fail. Saturday, which should have been his honeymoon, was instead the day Lowery passed with the setting sun. David Lowery, may you R.I.P.

Being rather synical, I hypothesize one will end in a nice inheritence and the other in death. But then you know me, I believe everything is all about money.

Wonder if Hager wore Hager slacks with his tux?

The haves v. the have nots. This is a stark contrast of the use of sunset.

Two cannibals just finished a big meal and one turns to the other while rubbing his stomach with his fist and says, "You
know, I just ate my mother-in-law, and she still doesn't agree with me!"

One weekend four of us married guys went golfing. During the 4th hole, I said: "You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out golfing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend."

My buddy Jim said,"That's nothing, I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool."

Larry responded: "Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her."

We all continue to play the hole. On about the sixth green, I notice that Brad P. had not said a darn word. So I said, "Brad, you haven't said anything about what you had to do to be able to come golfing this weekend with guys. What's the deal?"

Brad P.: "I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the A. a nudge and said, 'Golf course or intercourse?' A. told me, 'Don't forget your sweater.'"

so much cynicism about marriage . . . I wonder why?

Jenna Bush had a wedding. Keith Heidtman never will. Read an open letter to President Bush at

and leave a comment in support of ending the war

Kevin, all right. Okay, we get it.
Lt. Keith Heidtman, was killed in Iraq last Memorial Day. His helicopter took on heavy enemy fire and crashed. He left behind a loving mother, father, stepfather, sister, long-time girlfriend and scores of friends and other family members. It sucks. You blame President Bush.

Keith was a soldier. He served his country. You do not support the war. But come on, Kevin. This is not a thread about the war. It's about two contrasting weddings. While we get your point and sympathize with your loss, this is not the time or place.

May Keith R.I.P.

To bad none of you had the extreme pleasure of knowing David Lowery. He was one of the most uplifting and inspirational person I have had the pleasure of knowing for the last 27 years. He wanted people to get more information on his illness and become educated so research could find a cure for this disease. I will miss him so much and his wonderful sense of humor and outlook on life. Some people just don't get it. Well to bad for them.

Did David Lowerery pass? Please, share with us more about the man. We know he was dieing, but what else can you tell us?

To Dollar Bill and the others, while your levity may have been well intended, loved ones undoubtedly wish to mourn the loss of David without your cynical humor.

Thanks Pub Meister. But you know me. No offense meant. It is just that in my world, everything is about money.

I understand that most of you on this blog are just throwing your 2 cents in and trying(however failing miserably) to be funny. I know that everyone(who doesn't have a life and chooses to spend his/her time being a cynical a$$hole) likes to comment on matters such as this for their own entertainment. I however, being the nephew of David, don't find a single comment funny in the slightest degree. I would never wish that any of you have to endure the same negativity if one of your family members passed in a such a way. If and when you have to go threw the same, I hope that your experience will create as much attention so people will get a glimpse of your family and an amazing person(if you even believe there is such a thing). The whole purpose of this story was to educate people about a debilitating disease that just took an uncle, brother, father, son, friend and new husband. Maybe next time before you open your mouth, and begin one of your late night, I have nothing to do, insensitive blog comments, you should put yourself in someone else's shoes. Try mine on, and see how it feels. It's a good thing these are just written comments. I bet standing face to face, or in the emergency room with my family, you wouldn't have said a word. So hide behind your computer screens and keyboards and continue to be the way that you are. I promise you this, one day it will catch up with you, and maybe then you WILL be in my shoes.

My sympathy and prayers go out to David's family. And my prayers and blessings to Jenna and her new husband.

David and Roxanne's story indeed shows that true love does not need a lot of pomp and circumstance. It also shows us that sometimes life is not fair to good people.

While Jenna and Henry obviously had a more high-priced wedding than David and Roxanne, they were not the cause of David's illness nor any other circumstance that made David and Roxanne's wedding different than theirs.

I personally don't care for her dad's policies as a president - but on the various times I've seen her in the media lately she sure seems to have grown into a caring, intelligent young woman.

- Which post are you referring to?? If you are referring to my post at 11:35 then you must have read my comments completely the wrong way. I think very highly of HIS daughter after seeing her and her mom on various shows. She seems to be a very caring person and very down to earth.

Thankfully it is a free country where I can say I disagree with some of HIS policies. If I need to fear writing that then we're in big trouble as a country.

Please enlighten me as to what part of my comment appeared to be an insult to her.

I really think I was misunderstood in my other post just because of my comment at the end that I didn't agree with some of her dad's policies. That's the problem with trying to keep things short - sometimes the point is left out.

I made the comment:

"While Jenna and Henry obviously had a more high-priced wedding than David and Roxanne, they were not the cause of David's illness nor any other circumstance that made David and Roxanne's wedding different than theirs."

because I felt that the way the story was written it was almost like it was saying that Jenna and Henry should be ashamed for having such a nice wedding and I completely disagreed with that. It was like Jenna had all this - while these people didn't. I was trying to defend her. His illness and their inability to have a fancy wedding like Jenna's was not Jenna's fault.

I wrote:

"David and Roxanne's story indeed shows that true love does not need a lot of pomp and circumstance. It also shows us that sometimes life is not fair to good people."

not because I didn't think Jenna was a good person nor that she should be ashamed for being able to have a fancy wedding. My point was solely that both weddings were stories of love and sometimes bad things happen and that people can having lovely weddings even if they don't spend a lot of money. That was it period.

If Jenna is reading this - Congratulations! You absolutely were a beautiful bride and I wish you nothing but happiness and a long marriage. I'm sure your mom and dad are both proud of you. If my post offended you in any way, I sincerely apologize.

I've been a big fan of yours after seeing you on a show some time ago with Diane Sawyer where there was footage from your UNICEF or HIV/AIDs work where you went out at night to expose the world to the bleak picture of living conditions where you were. Previous to that the only view the public saw of you and your sister was when the media followed around during your college days and made you both out to be big partiers - no one should have to suffer through that IMO!
