Eve Carson Murdered Near North Carolina Campus By a Hoover Crip Gang Members? Lauren Burk Shot Near Auburn Campus by C. Lockhart ? Update: 7-4-08

Eve Carson was murdered without cause.

Eve was the president of the North Carolina student body who was the victim of a random shooting. Thousands of students gathered for a candlelight vigil in the campus pit. Chapel Hill Police Department confirm that Carson, 22, had been shot in a neighborhood about a mile from campus on Thursday. Her body was found lying in an intersection. Her blue 2005 Toyota Highlander was found about a mile from where her body was discovered. Her vehicle may have been stolen during the incident. Carson was a native of Athens, Georgia and a pre-med student. She had her whole life ahead of her.
Update 3-8-08:
If you have any information on this case, call NC WANTED toll free at 1.866.43.WANTED (1.866.439.2683)
The noose around Carson's killer is tightening. Police in Chapel Hill are releasing two surveillance photos of a possible suspect taken at an ATM machine in Chapel Hill. Photos were taken as the suspect used Eve Carson's ATM card. Police released the above photo of a a suspect in a baseball cap. Police have also released a photo at a convenience store.
Update 3-10-08: The hat worn by the suspect is green with an orange star. It appears to be the hat of the Hoover Crips gang. (Vintage Houston Astro's cap and hooded sweatshirt.)Enhanced photo's reveal one and perhaps two back seat passengers. Eve Carson dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate. If it turns out that gang bangers took her life, then I hope it is not in vain and law enforcement dedicates itself to eradicate gangs not just in North Carolina but nationwide.
Update 3-13-08: An anonymous tip led to the arrest of Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr. He is believed to be the back seat passenger in the vehicle at the ATM. Lovette is 17 according to Durham police Lt. Robert McLaughlin Jr. Demario James Atwater was previously arrested on Wednesday. Atwater was charged with first-degree murder. It appears that Lovette was driving the car in the ATM photos. Atwater was apparently the shadowey figure in the back seat. LINK Lovette's myspace: LINK Good work to the police and all those offering tips. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.

In Alabama, Lauren Burk, a female student from Georgia was found fatally shot on a road near the Auburn University campus Tuesday night. The investigation did not initially result in any arrests. The 18 year old freshman from Marietta Georgia was found wounded on Alabama Highway 147 around 9 p.m. Tuesday according to reports. Her car was discovered set on fire.

Update 3-7: Legal Pub has learned that the body of Ms. Burk was found on what Auburn students refer to as "College Street." It is in the middle of everything, only a small block from campus. In other words, she was not found on some deserted Highway.
Update 3-8: A press conference on Saturday morning in Auburn named a suspect. A Fox affiliate indicated that a prime suspect led police on a high speed chase. This suspect may also be responsible for armed robberies in Newnan, GA and Phenix City, Alabama. The suspect is Courtney Lockhart, age 23. WRBL TV reports that Lockhart was charged with Burk's murder. The CBS affiliate indicates that "investigators have recovered evidence" apparently connecting Lockhart to Burk's death. Lockhart is to be presumed innocent until otherwise proven. Courtney Lockart's photo can be seen here: PHOTO LINK

Update 3-10: Lockhart is charged with capital murder during a kidnapping; capital murder during a robbery; and capital murder during an attempted rape. According to WRBL News 3, Lockhart admitted he committed at least five armed robberies in the area in recent weeks.
Lockhart is also wanted in connection with an attempted carjacking and armed robbery in Newnan, Ga. He faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
So much for prison reform.
Update 5-1-08 Remembering Eve. You tube of Carolina Weekly after she won the student election. LINK
Update 6-28-08: Search warrants reveal the final terrifying moments of Eve's life. According to a confidential informant, Eve was kidnapped while studying at home. She was forced into her own vehicle so that the killers could access her ATM account. She was then shot multiple times in an attempt to cover up the crime. Superior Court Judge R. Allen Baddour released six warrants naming suspects Laurence Lovette, 17, and Demario Atwater, 22. Both suspects have been charged with the first-degree murder of Eve Carson. Lovette is represented by attorney, Karen Bethea-Shields, who of course objects to the hearsay in the warrants.
Jonathan Brown represents Atwater.

One warrant alleges that Lovette and Atwater entered Carson's home through an open door, kidnapped her and used her pin to withdraw $1,400 from the ATM. Carson's Bank of America receipt was found near her vehicle after her death. A shoe print was also apparently on the receipt. According to the warrant,
Carson was shot multiple times by Lovette and later by Atwater. Agent Brian Flemming of the State Bureau of Investigation said two separate weapons were used in the shootings. (That appears consistent with the informant's story.)

Update 7-4-08: The autopsy report can be read here: AUTOPSY Note: no alcohol in blood stream.

Update 6-8-11:
With regard to Eve Carson murder, Demario James Atwater, 23, received his federal life in prison sentence in Winston-Salem. He plead guilty to charges related to Eve Carson’s death. He was sentenced to life in prison on two counts and 10 years in prison on three counts. He was also ordered to pay more than $212,900 in restitution.

  7. Lori Slesinski age 24 disappeared from the Auburn campus and was never found. This was 2 years ago.

Is there some connection between Lori and Lauren?

Lori's car was also found burning. Should police be looking into a connection between Lori and Lauren's cases. Eva Carson is probably not related to the Auburn cases, but who knows?

Some are speculating that if all the details of Lauren's murder become public, there may be concern that students are not safe… The murderer has NOT been caught and Lauren may have been kidnapped on campus before she was shot...

Lori Slesinski was a 24-year-old blonde. Lauren Burk an 18-year-old brunette. Lori Slesinski has never been found. Lauren was left in a public area.

But this does not mean there is a serial killer at Auburn.Pervs often try to cover up their crimes by burning vehicles. Young women alone are often targets. the North Carolina girl, Eva, may be a copy cat or totally unrelated crime.

  8. I have noticed this case and now the Eva/UNC death the police are being very silent, I hope this means they are close to solving. It seems though the UNC police are not finding any leads or breaks so far. There have been too many campus related female deaths recently. Hell, my kid's campus(UNC-W) they employ convicts on work release in the food services and they live next to the campus! They did not tell the parents that at freshman orientation.

  9. Hope they crack both cases soon. Universities should screen workers better and have higher quality employees, in my opinion.

  13. A little infomration on Ms. Slesinksi. She was last seen in Auburn, Alabama on June 10, 2006. Her mother reported her missing five days later. Slesinski apparently lived in the Ridgewood Village Trailer Park and realized her daughter had been gone for some time. The dog had not been fed. At 4:41 a.m. on June 14, Slesinski’s blue 2005 Mazda Tribute with an Alabama license plate was found abandoned and actively burning in the roadway.

She had just purchased the vehicle a short time before her disappearance. The cause of the fire is unknown. Lab results have not been released.

Before she disappeared, there was some talk that she was not happy with her job.Slesinski has a bachelor's degree in psychology and criminology from Auburn. She graduated in 2005. She was employed at the East Alabama Mental Health Center.

  22. Police in Chapel Hill are releasing two surveillance photos of a possible suspect in the killing of University of North Carolina's student body president.

Police Chief Brian Curran said Saturday the photos were taken at an ATM machine in Chapel Hill. Curran says the photos were taken as the suspect used Eve Carson's ATM card.

Police also released a photo of a baseball cap the suspect appeared to be wearing in one of the surveillance photos.

Curran said they have yet to identify the suspect, but the photos are their strongest lead in the case. Police say Carson appears to be the victim of a random crime.

  30. michael e,

why does it have to turn into a "racial" situation?

Because of race hustlers like David Duke.

See what happened in Duke University for example.

  31. michael e,
good point. Let's just say I hope this doesn't happen. It seems there are always race-baiters out there (Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and David Duke) who would be jobless if they did not inject hatred into the equation. We can only hope this doesn't happen here.

Unfortunately, when a trajedy like these happen there are layers and layers of pain (kinda like an onion) for many people. Take a look at this article I just found about one of the suspects' mothers...sad.

  35. Just how bad is the gang problem in North Carolina? Raleigh's Police Department is putting a strong emphasis on the fight against local gangs. New initiatives are designed to counteract gang violence.

"The Raleigh Police Department considers gangs an emerging issue in Raleigh," said police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

There have been more than 600 gang-related crimes in the past three years. "There are two types of crime that involve gangs," he said.

"First is gang-involved crime, where some parties involved in a crime had a relationship to a gang. Secondly are gang-related crimes, which involve violence or crime carried out in the interest of the gang."

Police are addressing prevention, intervention and suppression. Jane Perlov, Raleigh's chief of police, states a new gang-prevention hot line, a multimedia campaign and community education have been added.

Some have suggested the need for intense counseling and community support. The Raleigh City Council approved new initiatives on gang prevention including graffiti removal.

Gang-suppression initiative include a new zero-tolerance approach to gang violence which includes increased prison sentences for proven gang members.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of declaring war on gangs.

  37. • Are Police and the justice system biased against minorities because they use profiling?.

    Crime Rates:

    • Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.

    • When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.

    • Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.

    • The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic

    ReplyDelete
  38. So is a person prejudice when he says that blacks tend to be more violent than whites?

Consider that about nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes are committed every year involving blacks and whites. Blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.

    • Do Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks? Forty-five percent of black perpetrator's victims are white. 43 percent are black. 10 percent are Hispanic. However, when whites commit violent crimes, only three percent of their victims are black.

Are Blacks mor likely to commit a violent crime? According to statistics, Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa. Blacks are statistically 136 times more likely to commit robbery.

Are Whites more prejudice then Blacks? Statistics show that Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.

Who is most likely to belong to a gang?
    • Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white. Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely. Asians are nine times more likely.

Who is more likely to go to prison?

    • Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate went from 139 to 482 per 100,000. The number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million. Statistics suggest that Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely then whites to be in prison.

So Mike, what does this do to Black & White relationships? I for one think it is time to start holding every one to the same standards. The same strict punishment for the crime regardless of race. And bring back the death penalty. For example, commit a gang related murder and you are sentenced to death. I don't care if that means statistically one race or the other has more folks who die as long as the system is administered fairly.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think the black/white issue is an over simplification of the problem.

I say replace the (select race) with, “those without involved, interactive, participatory parents.”

  46. This is not a race issue. This is an issue of pure EVIL. Evil deeds and criminal acts are committed by people of all races/ethnicities.

For anonymous who wrote that black are more violent than whites...please check your facts. Let's not talk about the atrociites committed by whites/europeans (holucaust, slavery, stealing of aboriginal children in australia, colonizing indigenous cultures across the globe)....let's get real.

Let's stop being distracted by race and deal with the real issue. We are living in a society that has lost it's mind. People are killing each other every day. In L.A. there have been 6 murders in 6 days and those are the ones we know about. What has happened?

Yes, gang-banging in all forms (street thugs, kkk, neo-nazis, etc) must stop.

It's a total shame that Eva and the others have been murders. But, their stories are just as sad as Lawrence King, Jamiel Shaw - whose mother was serving in Iraq when she received the news about the death of her son, there are others.

All of our children, white, black, brown, asian, are important and should be protected.

All of our children, white, black, brown, asian who committ horrible acts of violence should be punished and pay for their crimes.

This is 2008 can we finally move past the race issue and deal with what we all want...peace.

  51. There is a lot of degrading crap being posted about Eve or (Eva as she is sometimes called.)Another website wrote, “She and her clique of friends were common faces on the drug cuts... Rich white kids from the university frequently buy drugs and sex from their black male suppliers.” I find such statements as they pertain to Eve to be total crap and without any merrit!

Eve was a UNC senior and native of Athens, Georgia. She was heavily involved in campus affairs. As a pre-med student double majoring in political science and biology, she was very busy. She kept late hours studying. She was a recipient of the university’s prestigious Morehead Scholarship and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

    Demario James Atwater is scum.
Both Atwater and Lovett are pretending to be neighborhood heros bragging about how bad they are.

Atwater’s demeanor and stone face during his arrest are an attempt to look cool to his friends.
Lovett on the surveilance film was acting so cool just hours after the death.

Both suspects are on parole. Lovett was suposedly given a suspended sentence in January for misdemeanor larceny and breaking and entering. Atwater was convicted of felony breaking and entering in 2005 and illegal possession of a firearm in 2007. He also apparently received a suspended sentence.

Stephen Oates, 19, of Durham, was also charged with murder in Mahato's death. (Lovette wasn't charged until after his arrest in Carson's murder.)

    ReplyDelete
  77. The real tragedy is that Laurence Lovette was serving a two-year suspended sentence for larceny and breaking and entering at the time of Eve's murder. During the two months prior to Carson’s killing he was arrested several times for stealing and burglary and let go each time.
Now he will hopefully have the rest of his life to think about his actions in prison.

    ReplyDelete
  78. NO! Here is the real tragedy. The murders of two White coeds at major universities by Black predators illustrates a racial reality that the mass media ignores.

Tens of millions of White women are victimized by Black criminality. During the past four decades since the “civil rights” movement, crime figures show that millions of crimes have been committed by Blacks and other non-White predators against White females. Robbery, assault, rape and murder of any color person needs to end.
